Burning the Meji is a traditional worship of the God of Fire practiced by the Assamese people

Burning the Meji is a traditional worship of the God of Fire practiced by the Assamese people. The tradition of Meji burning has been continuing in the State from time immemorial. The Meji burning is held on the Puh-Magh Sankranti in the last day of Puh and the first day of Magh. Assamese people observe Uruka on the last day of Puh when they have feasting and merriment in the night, which continue till the early next morning. The Meji is burnt and people warm themselves by the fire. The fire symbolizes burning up of all evils and purification of self as well as the society. People propitiate the God of Fire and seek blessings for peace, prosperity and for safeguard against all calamities created by elements like fire, water and storm. (Sentinel)

With Bhogali Bihu approaching, preparations have started across the State. Bhogali Bihu is a harvest festival and it marks the end of the harvesting season.
